Insights from Local Tillage Farmers

In 2014, Robert was approached by his local Dairygold Area Sales Manager, Michael English, about using Koch Advanced Nitrogen (KAN) on his maize crop. KAN is a urea based nitrogen fertiliser powered by AGROTAIN nitrogen stabilizer which minimizes volatilization loss normally associated with the urea form of nitrogen. KAN is widely used throughout the world having originated in the US.  It has been on the UK market for over 4 years and is rapidly gaining ground, particularly with tillage farmers as the higher nitrogen concentration reduces the number of tonnes needed to be spread. It is a lower price per unit of nitrogen than CAN with independent research showing similar results to CAN type products. It is currently in its third year of trials at Teagasc Moorepark and Johnstown Castle.  Early reports are showing similar response to that seen with CAN.
Robert says ‘I understood the technology behind the product; I liked the idea of trying something new, and went with it without any hesitation.’ In a year that brought excellent growing conditions and with the help of KAN Robert explains ‘my maize yields exceed 22 tonnes per acre, and KAN performed to, if not better than my expectations.’ In addition Robert found the product to spread really well; up to 18 meters. Robert concludes ‘I am very happy with KAN and have already bought my requirements for 2015.’
